Hubert Sauper’s films touch upon urgent social and political issues in a poetic way, and have received more than 50 important international awards, including from the Venice Film Festival, Berlinale, Sundance, as well as the French, Austrian, and European Academy Awards. His film Darwin’s Nightmare was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category in 2006. Sauper’s new film Epicentro premiered at the International Documentary Competition of the Sundance Film Festival.  

This DOCU/CLASS will immerse the viewer in the world of political documentaries in general and particularly into Hubert Sauper’s approach, which combines sociopolitical focus with poetic documentation. 

The event is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum in Kyiv.

Hubert was born in Kitzbühel, Austria. He then lived in Great Britain, Italy, the USA, Tanzania, Congo and South Sudan. His ‘homebase’ has been France since the mid-90s. He studied film directing in Vienna and Paris. Sauper’s socio-political and poetic films have won over 50 major international prizes, among them awards at the Venice Film Festival, the Berlinale, Sundance, the French (César), Austrian and European Academy Awards. His documentary Darwin's Nightmare (2004) was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category in 2006. As an actor he has performed in several shorts and two feature-length films.

a civil rights activist, journalist, and coordinator of the No Borders project

Maksym Butkevych used to work for several Ukrainian TV channel as international news correspondent, for BBC World Service (Ukrainian Section) and for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Currently, as a coordinator for No Borders Project non-governmental initiative, he deals with issues of right to asylum and refugee assistance in Ukraine; xenophobia, hate speech and other forms of discrimination in Ukrainian society. He also consults Alliance for Public Health (Ukraine).

DOCU/CLASS programme event

The programme includes creative conversations with filmmakers, film critics, curators and researchers. They will share their experiences and approaches to editing in creative documentary filmmaking, talk about the phenomenon of vernacular cinema, about how storytelling can create a platform for dialogue, and how documentaries can become a sociopolitical tool.
